Compost Station

631-788-7227

All residential and commercial users:
Make advance arrangements with the Compost Station attendant before bringing large and/or heavy loads to the station.

The Compost Station handles an estimated 337 tons/year of the various materials, including: food scraps, yard waste, construction debris, household items: toys, clothing, lamps, brooms, mops, broken down garbage cans, appliances, bikes, landscaping machines, rugs, metal/plastic clothes hangers, furniture & tires, etc. In addition to residential customers, the Compost Station receives material from more than 19 commercial entities, although some commercial entities arrange for their own disposal via private haulers.

The Compost Station consists of a food scraps collection area, attendant shed, upper level where users deposit materials and load swap shop items, compost, and mulch, a lower level where containers are placed, and an office/shop. Processing equipment includes a horizontal grinder, compost screener, skid steer, backhoe, and a cordwood processor.

The District diverts organic material (food scraps, brush, logs) into compost, mulch, and firewood. These products are currently free to the community unless machine loaded ($25). Encouraging island residents and businesses to use FIWMD-made compost, mulch, and firewood instead of imported industrial products has myriad environmental and financial benefits.
