FIWMD Community Waste-to-Resource stewardship programs

As an island community, we know our resources are limited and that transporting waste adds to our carbon footprint. To that end, we ask our customers to help us “move beyond waste” and participate in a range of diversion programs, including our logs-to-cordwood program and our food scraps-to-compost program, where waste becomes a community resource in the form of free firewood and compost.

LOGS TO FIREWOOD

That time of year is here again. Residents are welcome to self-load a reasonable amount of unseasoned firewood (approximately 10 pieces/day) processed from the woody material brought to the station in 2026. Notes, limits are to ensure equitable distribution and will be evaluated throughout the season. The goal is to rehome the material, so the public can also help themselves to logs for off-site processing. Please note, no personal cutting tools or similar are permitted on site.

FIWMD encourages you to:

  • Bring your own safety equipment (gloves, safety glasses, and footwear)
  • Be courteous and respectful to others loading and collecting wood on site
  • Have fun and enjoy the fresh air as you collect

FOOD SCRAPS TO COMPOST

Drop off your food scraps year-round and pick up your free compost (usually in the late spring/early summer)!
